Chapter 5

Marilyn and Leroy walked, hand in hand, as they made their way out of the hospital. The day's events made every doctor in the cardiopulmonary unit retreat into their shells and go back to their fundamental caucuses. Leroy and Marilyn spent the rest of the day in her office together, except for when they went on their ward rounds.

“Leroy!”

They stopped in their tracks. Connor was walking towards them, with one hand in his pocket. Each stride exuded confidence, as he closed the distance between them. No one could have walked in at that moment, and confused who the hotshot was. Connor just had that air about him.

“What do you want this time?” Leroy asked, rolling his eyes.

Marilyn squeezed Leroy’s hand. She was not yet ready to be openly hostile to Connor again. She felt as if she owed him some loyalty for his actions earlier that day. He was not the most liked man by everyone, but he was nice to her. She did not have a reason to dislike him completely. At least, not as much as others. Connor was not everybody’s cup of tea.

“Can I talk to you for a minute, please?”

Leroy broke his hand from Marilyn’s. He raised his shoulder as he corked his head at an angle. Leroy’s eyes did not hide the disdain he felt for the interruption. It was already past seven o’clock, and he was off the clock. Connor was eating into his personal time, and he did not appreciate it.

“Alone.” Connor gestured in the direction he was coming from. His eyes met Marilyn’s for the first time, and he smiled awkwardly at her. “Please. You won’t regret this.”

Now, Connor piqued Leroy’s interest. He had never seen Connor so desperate to talk to him. Whatever Connor had, it had to be very good. Leroy was not counting, but he only heard Connor use the word “please” a couple of times.

“This better be good,” Leroy muttered, as he walked to where Connor stood. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Marilyn.”

Leroy followed Connor back to his office. Matty was waiting for them there when they entered. He had the permanent scowl on his face when he saw Leroy. He gestured for Leroy to take a seat; he willingly obliged.

“What’s going on here?” Leroy asked.

“You know that I’m not one to gossip, but I overheard something today that I think you might also find interesting.” Connor started.

Leroy smarted, as he waited for the latest trick that Connor had up his sleeve. He should have known better than to allow Connor’s polite, desperate appeals to get to him.

“What is it?” Leroy asked, as he reclined in his seat. He could not look more disinterested than he did at that moment.

“A few of the intern nurses were talking about some local model who they thought might be in a relationship with Marilyn.”

Leroy hunched in his seat. His heart skipped a few beats, as his eyes darted from Leroy to Matty.

“It’s the interns. They say a lot of things,” Leroy explained uneasily.
